  Abstract:

Until the advent of the computer driven embossers,Braille was produced manually or by embossing from a metal printing plate. As a result of natural wear and tear, storage and transport, new copies must be obtained at intervals , since the original plates no longer exist, reprinting the material relies on manual copying. This is time consuming, labour intensive and drain on limited resources, which results in material being withdrawn from service. The aim of this paper is to describe a automatic Braille translation system to store and recognize the Braille pages.

The algorithms developed toke advantage of the regular spacing between Braille dots within a cell, the regular spacing between cells and extracts any required data from the image. The method has been designed and developed to form a basis for translating single and double sided Braille.
Using thermoform solid dot Braille as the specimen, the system has been proved to be more than 99% ( single sided Braille page) and 93% ( double sided Braille page ) accurate on- the translation of the Braille pages.
