The text quality of image output by a copier or printer is very important
in the office environment. Visual examination has previously been used as
a basis for determining the legibility of printed characters. We
concentrated on line reproductivity and MTF, and studied the correlation
between legi-bility evaluated with "Kanji simulator" and each of
them in order to develop an object evaluation method. In line
reproductivity we processed the printed line image as likely as visual
observation at the viewing distance of 200 mm. The MTF of a reproduction
system was measured using a test chart with a various spatial frequency
patterns. As a result, we found that we can predict legibility by better
understanding and use of these two characteristics.
