  Abstract:

Ion flow printing have a clear advantage for high quality color printing because of its ability of dot modulation.  A prototype color printer, which can print 500 mm width of high quality pictorial image, is developed. The width of 500 mm was covered by using two ion projection heads of 250 mm width. Gray scale of 256 levels,  resolution of 300 dpi, and printing width of 500 mm is achieved by totally 6000 of apertures for  ion projection.  Gray levels of 256 steps in each color is accomplished by controlling the ion projection time period for each color dots of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. High quality continuous tone color reproduction and low granularity is realized by using liquid toner development process. Uniformity of optical density in the wide printing area is measured and confirmed to be sufficient for practical applications.  Ion flow printing is thus concluded feasible for high quality wide format color printing.
