  Abstract:

Starting with an overview on Functional Colorants, the contribution will describe the development and the application of colored and colorless CCAs (Charge Control Agents) for electrophotographic toners. The term “functional” at Functional Colorants refers to the fact that not only color but also other material properties like e.g. electrostatic ones are relevant for the application. Based on the understanding of such electrostatic properties, the concept of “Tonergrade Color Pigments” for full color copying and printing is discussed in detail on selected examples.

For ink jet applications the development of salt free dyes will be shown, focusing on specific dye characteristics like water and light fastness. The different demands for various applications like office and industrial application, water or solvent based inks, and hot melt inks, will be explained. Furthermore one of the most recent tendencies, pigmented ink jet inks, will also be discussed (e.g. aqueous pigment-resin systems for outdoor ink jet application with very high light and weather fastness).  The contribution will include the description of a colorant for the D2T2 process (dye diffusion thermal transfer), as a typical example for thermal transfer printing
