  Abstract:

The overview begins with the 1st Generation of "off-the-shelf" dyes followed by the design and commercialisation of the worlds first high waterfast dyes, both black and colour (yellow, magenta and cyan). These dyes employed the dual principles of differential solubility and smelling salts.
Current dye research is directed towards producing dyes which have 100% instant water fastness combined with high chroma, light fastness and operability. Some new approaches required to achieve this are discussed.
Current pigment research is aimed at improving the rub/smudge fastness of the black ink and the chroma of the coloured inks. Ways of achieving this are discussed.
Finally, future trends such as the ideal colorant, matched media and enlarged colour gamuts, are discussed.
