  Abstract:
In the two component xerographic development process, toners are transported from the development sump to the development nip by magnetic carriers. There is evidence showing material abuse because of the harsh mechanical work done on the developer in the trim zone region. This abuse leads to quick material deterioration and developability loss. By optimizing the magnetic field in the developer roller, one can reduce the material abuse and improve the developer life. A numerical model is used in this work to investigate the material abuse in the trim region. This model includes the magnetic force on the carrier beads and mechanical interactions between the beads, the magnetic roller shell and the trim blade. This dynamic model generates developer flow and various energy information around the magnetic roller. The energy stored in the carrier beads in the trim region is used to compare the effect of different magnetic fields. The comparison results can help design better magnetic rollers.
