A novel class of
2-phenylnaphthoquinone derivative (PNQ), which is useful as a sensitizer
of organic photoconductor (OPC) has been developed. In a molecular design,
we attended to make PNQ have a chemical stability and a compatibility into
a matrix of OPC in addition to have a good xerographic property as a
matter of course. A chemical stability of PNQ was designed by a
substitution of 2- and 3- positions of naphthoquinone which were the sites
of a nucleophilic reaction, and a difference of these substituents made
the compatibility improved. To perform this molecular design, 2-phenyl-1,
3-indandione (PID) was selected as a raw material, and PNQ was derived
from PID having carbonyl group in 2- position via a ring expansion and an
oxidation. Xerographic properties of PNQ was examined as a sensitizer of a
single-layer OPC for positive charging with various xerographic
measurements and it has been recognized that PNQ was useful as a
sensitizer of a single-layer OPC and it was indicated that the
sensitization mechanism depended on the sensitization of charge generation
efficiency as well as the improvement of an electron transport ability of
a single-layer OPC.
