The Society of Electrophotography of Japan was established in 1958. The
first chairman was Dr. Kikuchiand the members were 29 pioneers. At present
the number of members has reached about 1,100 and there are 79 companies
sponsoring the Society. Although the SEPJ was originally formed based on
electrophotography, it now covcrs non-impact
printing Such as inkjet and electronic imaging such as rewritable marking
within its scope. The Japanese copying and printing
machine industry is about to grow again thanks to a technological revolution,
that is, digitalization and colorization. Digitalization is proceeding so
rapidly world wide that we are confronting genuine
digitalization. Electrophotography is based on various fields Of science
and technology such as physics, optics, chemistry,
mechanics and electronics. These are interdisciplinary. l believe that
Interdisciplinary is a strong advantage for the progress of
imaging science and technology. Maturing technology and
industry were both experienced during the 40 year span of the SEPJ up
until now. It is now time for us to change and meet
the challenges of the 21st century. I would like to decide to follow a new
direction in the field of imaging science and
technology, considering the latest environmental and industry trends.
